Lived in Kyoto for five years and moved three times

Updated: Oct 20, 2022

Life never goes as we wished. I never find myself wanting to move often, but I have moved eight times in twelve years contrary to what I had thought. Now I can see the positive side of changing environment as the cities I lived has had a huge impact on my life which nourished me and created me who I am now.

I live in Kyoto since 2017 and I have done moving three times since. However, it didn't mean I have lived in different areas in Kyoto, but all apartments are located in the Sakyo ward. Moreover, I could say that all the places are within walking distance. I like living in Sakyo ward, and probably I can write the reason why in the future.

The first apartment I lived in for about two years was so small. The layout is called 1K (meaning one room with a kitchen). There is a tiny kitchen which is almost impossible to cook at. Toilet and shower room aren't separated. I had to use a coin laundry located on a different floor of the building because there was no room to put a washing machine in my room. It was far from my ideal room.

The second apartment was slightly small for two people. It's 1LDK (It consists of a living room and dining kitchen room)I moved in with my husband but we found out that the apartment was cramped after bringing all our furniture and stuff. Also, our room was not soundproofed well. However, I liked the kitchen so much. It's next to a large tall window so I could have natural sunlight when I was cooking. Natural sunlight made my cooked dishes look extra delicious.

The one that we live in is perfect for a couple and one child. When I started my infertility treatment, I knew that soon or later, once I was pregnant, I wouldn't be able to carry heavy stuff and would find moving too challenging. That's when I decided to move from the second apartment to the current one. It's a 3LDK (that means three rooms and one living/dining-kitchen room) layout.

If I think about our next place to live, I'd love to choose a house with a small garden because a house is better for a child's emotional development. I like my neighborhood so I want to find a house nearby. That'll be ideal. Housing cost is relatively cheap in Kyoto and Kyoto has a variety of housing types from Machiya to a concrete building so it's a waste if we don't try different types!
